The Truth in Nutrition

As a combatives instructor for the US military (including the US Marines, US Army Rangers, and US Navy SEALs), as well as a former UFC fighter, I see the human body as a powerful machine with the potential for excellence in many areas, including strength, speed, stamina, and recovery. Until I got badly injured while training, I never thought this potential had much to do with food, which I saw mainly as just calories and protein.

But, unable to train for six months after my injury, I started researching the optimal diet for recovery and stumbled across a study about the Roman gladiators which concluded that they ate little or no meat. This seemed really far-fetched to me since I was confident that animal protein was necessary to build muscle, sustain energy levels, and recover from injury. So I flew to Austria to meet the researchers who made this discovery and left convinced that the gladiators — known at the time as Hordearii, or “the Barley Men” — really did train and compete on a plant-based diet.

This shocking discovery launched me on a five-year quest for the Truth in Nutrition, modeled after Bruce Lee's Truth in Combat philosophy: "Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is specifically your own.” Beginning with this mindset, I put every preconception I had about nutrition to the test, traveling to four continents to meet with dozens of the world’s strongest, fastest, and toughest athletes, as well as leading experts on athletics, nutrition, and anthropology.

What I discovered was so revolutionary, with such profound implications for human performance and health — and even the future of the planet itself — that I had to share it with the world.

A Yoga/Thai Chi Fusion Demo Class

Come join Mike Graney and friends in this fluid and dynamic practice that fuses movement, postures and philosophies of tai chi, qi gong and yoga. 

Tai chi and yoga asana have much in common and much to benefit one another through their distinct differences. Where yoga often emphasises static holding and specific engagements and alignments tai chi offers a looser and more fluid approach that allows energy to flow through the body with less resistance. This class will introduce you to qi gong and tai chi in a way that integrates naturally with familiar yoga asana. 

Mike lived in the area from 1986-1998 and has been in and out of the region ever since. He began studying yoga and martial arts at the same time in 1981 and has pursued the practices in different schools ever since. The best teacher is of course Nature and the lessons learned from River and Earth figured prominently in all his practices. He has lived in New Zealand for most of the last 15 years.

Thanksliving Day - Plant Based Pot Luck Celebration

Join us for a healthy alternative to the normal culinary affairs. This Thanksgiving Day Pot Luck Celebration will be all plant based.

Please bring a dish to share that contains NO animal products: Dairy (cheese, butter, milk or cream), Eggs, Meat, Fish, Poultry, Honey, etc. 

That can be as simple as replacing ingredients in your regular recipes, for example coconut oil for butter, nut milk alternatives for dairy, nut cheeses, whipped chick pea liquid makes a great replacement for eggs! If you are stuck at all on recipes don't hesitate to reach out to us for ideas. Please leave a comment below about what kind of dish you will be bringing so we don't overlap & end up with too much of the same thing. 

*If possible, please bring your own plate & silverware & serving utensils for your dish. We have some but not enough to accommodate everyone. 

**Please write out a Label Card with the name of your dish + ingredients (allergens etc)

Shawn's music has been described as easy to listen to. His wide vocal range, and smooth delivery make for a very pleasing sound to the ears. Listeners are drawn into Shawn's performance because of the authenticity in his music, and in him. Hart writes songs about life, drawing from his own experiences and interpretations on the happenings around him. Country, folk, rock, with a little bit of pop is a solid base to start describing the music of Shawn Hart. No matter the song, listeners will be assured that  Shawn will convey the emotional intent, and deliver a performance to be remembered. 

BIO

Although Shawn Hart now calls New Braunfels, TX home, growing up in south central Wisconsin provided him with a different perspective on life, and a different variety of music to shape those perspectives. "Music has always been a part of my life", Hart says as he recounts tales of singing country music with his Mom, and rocking out, loudly, to John Melloncamp with his Dad. When Shawn moved to Texas and was introduced to singer songwriters, story tellers, and music over performance, which changed his world. This is when Shawn started writing songs that were more than skin deep, songs that make the listener think. Songs about God, mistakes, gaining and losing real love, and even the danger within. Hart's says his musical roots can still be found in some of his music. "The stadium country and top-of-your-lungs rock will always be in there somewhere." Since starting music full time in 2015, Shawn has been entertaining crowds, and gaining the respect of fellow musicians, non stop with no end in sight. Shawn released an EP titled, Real World, in December of 2018, which can be found on all digital streaming services. Hart says, "I am pleased with how this record came out. It is the exact record I wanted to make, and I believe it represents me, and my music, well."
