West African Dance Workshop

West African Dance encompasses many different dance styles from many different ethnic groups out of western Africa. This workshop will consist of a warm-up utilizing West African dance techniques, then move into exploring a specific dance style, all accompanied by live drumming. All levels are welcome!

Baba Fred’s bio: Drummer, teacher, and drum maker Fred Simpson was drumming his mother’s pots and pans at one-and-a-half years of age. He started drumming professionally at UC-Santa Cruz and in the decades since then has performed, taught, and lectured in New York City, at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Ethnic Dance, and many more venues.

Deollo’s bio: Dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer Deollo Johnson has been dancing most of his life. He’s done West African dance for decades, performing professionally in many venues and teaching internationally, including at Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) and the Creative Dance Institute in Thailand.

Smiley Coyote Bio:

When not behind the decks providing sultry soundscapes, Smiley Coyote can be found behind a camera lens or on a pottery wheel. Starting out as a public radio DJ in 2007 in Durango Colorado, he orchestrated a sunrise show awakening the region with mellow beats. Since then, he has toured with the Salt Fire Circus as their DJ and shared the stage with EDM names such as Tipper, Heyoka (Andreilien), Bluetech, Kalya Scintilla, JPOD and Birds of Paradise to name a few. Preferring the Ecstatic Dance scene to share his array of sounds, he regularly plays all around Northern California, Colorado and New Mexico. With sets ranging from yoga classes to all night dance parties, Smiley Coyote taps into the pulse of the crowd and plays completely for the vibe.

Robert is a Nationally Recognized Sound Healing Practitioner, Artist, Producer & Visionary. Who fort the last decade has hosted over 100 workshops and performed at some of the top transformational festivals, wellness expos & yoga events in the US.

 He has an extensive portfolio in the A/V Industry & Intelligent Dance Music Community. Over the last decade his works and popularity have begun traversing the globe as he’s been sharing his music & insights on the Sacred Spirit of Sound at renowned transformational festivals, wellness expo’s & yoga teacher trainings. Robert's Music Career started while attending Audio Engineering School in Amsterdam, NL in 2001 where he graduated top of class. While schooling in Europe he landed an internship at world renowned FABRIC Nightclub from 02’ to 03’ . 

      He has been Music Director/ Dj’d events & fashion shows for the likes of Ocean Drive, Betsy Johnson, Nicole Miller & the NFL. He has worked in some of South Florida’s top Venue’s including Gryphon @ Hard Rock Casino & Mansion in Miami, FL. Over the past decade he’s released music on several International Record Labels including SONY Music, Ministry of Sound & Nervine Records. Over the Years the combination of practicing yoga and meditation lead Robert to the field of Sound Healing. Where using Principles Anatomy, Physiology, Acoustics, Physics & Sympathetic Resonance a Practitioner can learn Simple yet Highly effective methods using Sound for helping an individual go from a fight or flight stressed state to a calm relaxed state of being usually within a few minutes. MysticKa is the alter ego of Tara Czutno based in Denver. From an early age she was enamored with music, played violin and piano and grew up with an interest in many diverse genres (Classical, Showtunes, Disco, Pop, Rock, Heavy Metal, Funk and Jazz). In 2003 she went to her first Psytrance party and got infected. She has been an electronic music aficionado ever since She started djaying in 2012 playing Progressive Psytrance and Downtempo. Her sound is funky deep bass lines, emotional melodies, healing sounds, and chakra aligning arrangements. SATTVA ANANDA (Santa Fe, NM)
Sattva Ananda got his first musical instrument at the age of thirteen (a drum kit). From there he learned to play percussion instruments of various types, including the didgeridoo, congas, djembe, nyabinghi drums etc. In the early 90,s he played in funk and groove oriented bands. In 1996 he started the venture towards loop based music, eventually leading to his owning a small studio and the self production abyss of electronic based music. Today he focuses on what is broadly known as bass music. Sattva has been producing bass music for many years, with numerous releases on Party Time Society and Desert Trax. He is best known for his Moombahton sets that always bring a smile to those on the dancefloor. We're honored to have him up to Taos for a guest appearance.

JULIA DAYE (Taos, NM)
Julia has been moving dance floors since 2012. Offering an invigorating mix of sounds and rhythms from all over the world, she offers an alchemical experience through embodiment of beat. Mixing music “for the whole community,” Julia offers a uniquely ageless sound, inviting all to take part and move. Since Spring of 2013, Julia has been producing and DJing events of all kinds; private celebrations, festivals, dance clubs, large concert venues, dance/embodiment workshops, and not for profit events. In 2014, Julia created and began DJing and hosting a weekly world music music show for KNCE True Taos Radio in Northern New Mexico. The show, titled “What Are These These Things?” airs live every Tuesday 10 am – 1pm MST both locally and to an national online audience.
